Alluna Optics delivers 24 inch optics to an Austrian observatory

Which amateur astronomer doesn't dream of an observatory of his own away from the sea of light of large towns? Richard Gierlinger from Schärding in Upper Austria has fulfilled this dream himself. The preconditions were good, Richard Gierlinger designs and manufactures big constructions as well as controls for telescopes already for years.

The new observatory stands on a hill without disturbing light sources away from traffic. The 5.5 meters of dome houses the main instrument which can be radioguided from the first floor.
The outbuilding was rebuilt as a workshop. The situation is made for astronomical observations – on one side the splendid Alps panorama, on the other side the look from above at the 10 km remote Schärding.

What was still missing was the main mirror for the main instrument, a 61 cm parabolic mirror with a focal length of 2828 mm. The German company Alluna Optics received the order for the production in July. The mirror was already completed in the middle of September and coat with an aluminum layer. Wolfram Felber (Alluna Optics) brought the parabolic mirror personally and visited the observatory. Because of the good groundworks the mirror was inserted into the special 27-points main mirror setting in short time. After a short justification of eyepiece statement, heliostat and main mirror the first starlight could already be captured. The excellent measurements out of the examining laboratory of lambda 1/10 PV wavefront (distance between the highest and the lowest point of the surface profile) and a Strehl of ,985 were confirmed.

This night some objects were still watched visually, unfortunately limited by a bright sky background caused by a full moon. So the ring fog showed numerous contours in the constellation Lyra despite full moon. The ball star cluster M13 was dissolved up to the center just like M92 in an immediate proximity.

In future, the Newton telescope will primarily carry out his jobs in the CCD photography and ferreting little planets and comets out.
